4 Star Comfort
Pets welcome by arrangement(Not Groomscott)
Over time the sea has breached Porlock's shore, creating a sanctuary
for the egret, kingfisher, heron, skylarks and peregrine falcon. The
shy otter thrives and seals, such welcome visitors, can sometimes be seen to bob up and down
in the sea.
A mile along the beach is the tiny harbour of Porlock Weir, crammed with small sailing craft. Overlooking the harbour are a handful of hotels "The Old Ship Inn" and a frock shop you dare not go in!
On fine evenings, a memorable sight is the sun sinking slowly into the sea, it's pink glow blanketing the beach cottages, waves lapping pebbles on a retreating tide. Even better viewed after a lovely day, with a glass of wine at hand.
There is much to see and do. Porlock has easy access to the South West Coast Path, Two Moors Way, Coleridge Way, and the famous Doone Valley. A paradise for walkers riders and bikers, or view it from the comfort of an Exmoor Safari vehicle or open top bus.
Porlock is surrounded by the National Trust villages of Allerford, Selworthy, Bossington, Luccombe and Horner, with their ancient thatched cottages, tall chimneys, bread ovens, clustered around village greens, some serving Exmoor cream teas.
Six
miles away is the medieval village of Dunster which has a Norman
Castle, Yarn Market and ancient church. The West Somerset Steam Railway
runs through lush countryside from the nearby golfing resort
of Minehead. A short drive through jaw dropping scenery leads to Lynmouth and Lynton
and the Valley of the Rocks, supporting wild goat herds. Further afield
the huge surfing beaches of Combe Martin, Croyde and Woolacombe,
Clovelly, Lundy Island and many National Trust properties.
We have lived in Porlock for twenty eight years. Between us riding and walking extensively. Our Exmoor self-catering apartments are perfectly placed to enjoy the timeless beauty and tranquillity of Exmoor.
Just let us know when you would like to come. Or come back.
